FORMER JAKARTA GOVERNOR WITHDRAWS APPEAL OF JAIL SENTENCE

Basuki Tjahaja (Ahok), the former governor of Jakarta was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after his political opponents accused him of blasphemy against Islam during the election campaign.
Ahok initially filed an appeal against his sentence but he later issued a statement saying that it was not easy for him but he has learnt to forgive and accept the sentence for the benefit of the nation. He appealed to people protesting on his behalf to stop protesting and holding demonstrations.
According to Christian Today, his wife is supportive of his decision. She said that she and the children, along with the whole family are going to try to support him in his struggle.
Many Indonesians and people around the world are concerned about Ahok’s imprisonment as it goes to show that Islam has an oppressive influence in the country and Christians are at high risk of discrimination and imprisonment for standing for Christ.
